The success of work teams in modern organizations goes far beyond collaboration to achieve organizational objectives. The purpose of this study is to review the history, conceptual foundations, characteristics and studies that different authors have conducted about the Distributed Leadership (DL) in work teams, as an alternative for optimizing their effectiveness. It identifies their distinctive elements, conceptual currents and factors to be considered in their implementation. It discusses how DL may positively influence the performance of the teams
