O bom caráter é uma área fundamental da psicologia positiva. Neste artigo, são analisadas as forças de caráter por meio de uma metodologia qualitativa, utilizando análise de conteúdo. O objetivo é identificar variações culturais da Classificação VIA, empregando uma abordagem mista: ética derivada. Essa abordagem serve para identificar as variações que os construtos psicológicos apresentam em determinadas culturas, ou seja, um estudo de ética derivada consiste em comparar sistematicamente o mesmo processo psicológico em diferentes culturas. Para isso, foi utilizada uma amostra intencional não probabilística de 854 estudantes universitários (273 do Equador, 277 do Peru e 304 do Paraguai). Os participantes preencheram o Protocolo de Qualidades Positivas. Os principais resultados indicam uma estrutura dimensional que apresenta diferenças entre indivíduos de culturas distintas, pois cada país tem relações específicas com determinadas forças de caráter (por exemplo, Equador com persistência; Peru com integridade e prudência; e Paraguai com humildade/ modéstia, amor e coragem). A principal conclusão é que foram detectadas diferenças interculturais na estrutura dimensional das forças de caráter. Entre as limitações destaca-se o fato de que as amostras utilizadas podem não corresponder ao cidadão médio de cada cultura. Portanto, é recomendado investigar as diferenças intraculturais nas forças de caráter e identificar as causas das diferenças transculturais encontradas.
