A variabilidade comportamental pode ser interpretada como uma dimensão operante do comportamento que está suscetível ao reforçamento e ao controle por estímulos discriminativos. O esquema lag de reforçamento tem emergido como uma tecnologia promissora para aumentar a variabilidade operante em diferentes populações em contextos aplicados e, mais especificamente, para desenvolver variabilidade em respostas verbais. O presente estudo tem por objetivos revisar, atualizar e analisar a literatura que utilizou esquemas lag de reforçamento em humanos como estratégia para aumentar a variabilidade comportamental de respostas verbais. Foi realizada uma revisão da literatura seguindo as diretrizes do Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), que incluiu 29 artigos encontrados segundo os critérios utilizados. Os resultados sugerem que o uso de esquemas lag de reforçamento se constitui como uma tecnologia comportamental que promove variabilidade de respostas verbais, sobretudo para os operantes “intraverbal” e “mando”, predominantemente investigados nos estudos analisados. Todavia, estudos futuros precisam investigar de forma mais aprofundada aspectos como generalização, manutenção, aplicação em diferentes populações e amostras maiores, além de replicar os resultados já obtidos para melhor consolidá-los e elucidá-los.
