Abstract

Tourism is a complex phenomenon, of a unique and heterogeneous nature, practiced outside home. Its development derives in opportunities and consequences that impact the economic, socio-cultural, and environmental scenarios of the host communities. Objective: To identify the main topics of interests, related thematic areas and research foresight of the study of community-based alternative tourism, through the analysis of the academic production published during the last 55 years. Methodology: The Tree of Science platform is used to analyze 592 documents in Scopus and WoS between 1969 and 2024. Key findings: Three thematic clusters (research foresight), 5 main thematics, and of these, 10 predominant related areas (topics of interests) were identified. Conclusions: It is concluded that: (1) it is required to identify, analyze and explain the attitudes and perceptions of the actors of the tourism network in order to have a complete vision of tourism development, (2) alternative tourism benefits the conservation of the environment and the sustainable development of local communities, and (3) the implementation of policies, strategies and processes of oversight, training and education that promote equal conditions between communities and other actors in the tourism network is required.
