El turismo es un fenómeno complejo, de naturaleza singular y heterogénea, practicado fuera del hogar. Su desarrollo deriva en oportunidades y consecuencias que repercuten en los escenarios económicos, socioculturales y ambientales de las comunidades anfitrionas. Objetivo: identificar los principales temas de interés, áreas temáticas conexas y prospectiva investigativa del estudio del turismo alternativo de base comunitaria, mediante el análisis de la producción académica publicada durante los últimos 55 años. Metodología: se emplea la plataforma Tree of Science para analizar 592 documentos identificados en Scopus y WoS entre 1969 y 2024. Resultados principales: se identificaron tres clústeres temáticos (prospectiva investigativa), cinco temáticas principales, y de ellas, diez áreas conexas predominantes (temas de interés). Conclusiones: se concluye que 1) se requiere identificar, analizar y explicar las actitudes y percepciones de los actores de la red turística para tener una visión completa del desarrollo turístico; 2) el turismo alternativo beneficia la conservación del medio ambiente y el desarrollo sostenible de las comunidades locales, y 3) se requiere la implementación de políticas, estrategias y procesos de veeduría, capacitación y educación que fomenten la igualdad de condiciones entre las comunidades y demás actores de la red turística.
