En las economías desarrolladas, así como en las emergentes, ha surgido una importante literatura sobre el desarrollo del turismo sostenible. En la última década, los académicos, empresarios y el gobierno, han reconocido, cada vez más, que son necesarias unas directrices claras para el desarrollo y la sostenibilidad de los destinos turísticos. La promoción del desarrollo del turismo sostenible es urgente debido a la doble tendencia del cambio climático global y la masificación de la industria turística a nivel mundial. La presente revisión utilizó técnicas de cartografía científica para examinar 521 documentos indexados en Scopus® y WoS® sobre el desarrollo del turismo sostenible en Latinoamérica y El Caribe y se procesó la información en Bibliometrix® y VOSviwer® para facilitar la comprensión de los datos. Los objetivos de la revisión son documentar el tamaño, el crecimiento y la distribución de esta literatura en Latinoamérica y El Caribe, identificar sus principales revistas, autores y documentos, destacar los temas emergentes y resaltar la estructura intelectual emergente, en razón a limitada disponibilidad de información en la literatura disponible. La revisión aporta pautas para que los académicos de la región desarrollen investigaciones que puedan favorecer el desarrollo del turismo sostenible en el futuro.
