General conditions for the revitalization of brownfields with suspicion of contamination in Latin America

Abstract

The revitalization of brownfields with suspicion of contamination constitutes a great potential not only for urban renovation but also for strengthening social cohesion in Latin-American cities and to actively promote sustainable urban development. Despite this, it is a strategy that has received  little attention in most Central and South-American countries, and it has shown some motivating results in Europe. The Integration project has been working for three years with six Latin-American  cities –including Bogotá–, in cooperation with the city of Stuttgart in Germany and funded  by the European Commission and its URB-AL III program to test the viability of introducing this practices. This article summarizes the learned lessons on the pilot projects and proposes six  concrete recommendations based on these experiences, through the revision of guide models of  urban development, the fields of action and some already concluded revitalization projects.
