Corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability are essential aspects in the tourism sector, given that they entail an environmental, social and economic balance for sustaining the destinations and the wellbeing of the communities. However, there is a lack of connection between knowledge and practice, which has repercussions in the common wellbeing. Objective: To understand the concepts of sustainability and CSR in the tourism industry, based on a meta-narrative review of the literature, so as to answer the question: how have said concepts evolved in the tourism industry, and which dimension is prioritized? Methodology: The research was conceived as an analytical and exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, under the guidelines of the RAMESES literature review protocol. Key findings: It was found that there is great interest in sustainability research and CRS related to the social and environmental dimensions, but the economic dimension takes precedence over the others. Conclusion: Both terms have become fragmented over time, which has prevented the establishment of a clear and precise definition and has, in turn, led to the acceptance of almost any definition.
