Objetivo: generar proposiciones de diseño para la orquestación universitaria de ecosistemas de innovación en economías emergentes mediante el rediseño del Programa Impact de la Universidad de Cuenca (Ecuador), desde la perspectiva de la colaboración universidad-empresa y la cuádruple hélice. Metodología: se empleó un enfoque de investigación-acción. La investigación incluyó una encuesta a 45 pymes de Cuenca y talleres participativos con ocho empresas seleccionadas. La evidencia se analizó mediante una estrategia de métodos mixtos e interpretada a partir de la literatura sobre cuádruple hélice, organizaciones intermediarias y orquestación de ecosistemas. Resultados principales: las principales necesidades de innovación de las empresas participantes se concentran en procesos, estructura, servicios y desempeño de producto. Asimismo, la comparación entre las encuestas y los talleres evidenció que la comprensión de los desafíos de innovación evoluciona gracias a procesos participativos de interacción. Como contribución principal, el estudio formuló tres proposiciones de diseño relacionadas con el diagnóstico participativo, la traducción de desafíos empresariales en oportunidades de innovación y la formulación estratégica basada en evidencia. Conclusiones: los resultados sugieren que las universidades pueden desempeñar funciones de intermediación y orquestación por medio de mecanismos participativos que fortalecen la innovación empresarial y la colaboración dentro de los ecosistemas de innovación.
