Se muestran los hallazgos de una investigación tendiente a medir el grado de orientación al mercado de exportación por parte de las pequeñas y medianas empresas exportadoras del Departamento del Atlántico, Colombia. El fundamento teórico reposa sobre los conceptos de orientación al mercado (OM) y orientación al mercado de exportación (OME). Se desarrolló un estudio cuantitativo, descriptico y no experimental de campo. Se aplicó un cuestionario de 66 afirmaciones tipo Likert a una muestra de 35 empresas. Se llevó a cabo un Análisis de Componentes Principales (ACP) y un Análisis de Cluster, mediante el software SPSS-21. Se observó un grado de OME medio a medio-alto para toda la muestra (3,3), con diferencias significativas entre dimensiones. A partir de esas diferencias, las empresas fueron clasificadas en tres grupos, de acuerdo con sus niveles de audacia y orden en su OME: Empresas tímidas, empresas entusiastas y empresas encaminadas.
