The article analyzes the social vulnerability of the San Juan sub-region in the department of Chocó through a sustainable livelihood approach. Through semi-structured interviews with households of Afro-descendant and indigenous families in three municipalities (N = 132) and a cluster analysis. We found the emergence of differential vulnerable groups: two groups of indigenous people (1, 2) and five groups of Afro-descendants (3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Medium and high vulnerability was observed in some human, physical and financial capital variables. In terms of natural and social capital, there was low and medium vulnerability due to the agroecological systems that are still applied in the territory and the community practices that are still preserved (groups 1, 5, 7). The livelihood approach applied to rural communities provides an operational basis for the design of social policies and climate change mitigation and adaptation policies.
