The constitutional history of Canada and the United States depict great ideological contradictions  that  make  the  former  be  labeled as conservative whereas the later is characterized  as liberal. However, the legal treatment of freedom of expression, especially freedom of press, is very similar in both countries. This article tries to explain how this two nations arrive to the XX century, although the deep historical disparities, providing similar legal treatment to this liberty.
