Introdução: o objetivo deste estudo foi compreender o conjunto de crenças pessoais que fundamentam a síndrome da fibromialgia, entre um grupo de profissionais de saúde chilenos cujo trabalho inclui o diagnóstico e tratamento desta condição. Desenvolvimento: durante o ano de 2018, foram realizadas dezesseis entrevistas em profundidade com profissionais com experiência no manejo clínico da fibromialgia e que atuavam nos sistemas de saúde público e privado na cidade de Santiago do Chile. Conclusões: os resultados mostram cinco eixos temáticos que delimitam e predispõem a prática clínica em torno desses pacientes: 1) Definição e quadro clínico, 2) caracterização dos que apresentam fibromialgia, 3) gênero e fibromialgia, 4) tratamento e relação terapêutica e 5) fibromialgia e contexto familiar. Conclui-se que as crenças dos profissionais atuantes têm um papel importante no trabalho clínico e no vínculo estabelecido com quem sofre de fibromialgia, desde que apoiem a possibilidade de intervenção. A partir de um papel pedagógico, busca-se a modificação de um amplo espectro de comportamentos que estão distantes do que os profissionais consideram uma qualidade de vida adequada, sob o pressuposto de que isso levará à redução da dor típica desse diagnóstico.
