Introduction: The aim of this research was to measure sleep quality perceived by the nursing staff of the E.S.E. Hospital Regional de Velez on 2012. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study with quality approach was performed. In order to obtain the information, the Sleep Quality Index of Pittsburgh, Colombian version was applied and it was conducted with a focus group with 17% of the surveyed population. Results: The average sleep quality of the population was 4.1 ± 2.6 and the prevalence of poor sleepers of 24.9 %. The most disturbed components of sleep duration were the duration and sleep latency. The main findings of the focus group were related to the incidence of having children, especially if they are small; sleep quality, stress identification and its main precursors of both intra-job (job insecurity, workload and lack of institutional support, etc.) and outside work (personal issues and the circumstances of family relationships) as a construct related to sleep quality. Conclusion: The hospital was recommended to review and adjust shift organization and other organizational aspects that could impact in a better sleep quality of nurses.
