The covid-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalization of daily life due to various restrictive measures and precautionary decisions. The impact of social media use on wellbeing depends on context and usage patterns. This paper analyzes the causal effect of social media use on the subjective well-being of the Latin American population during the pandemic. Pre- and post-pandemic periods are also examined for comparison. An instrumental variable regression model is used to address endogeneity, employing internet access quality as an instrument. A negative effect of social media on well-being is found, which worsens over time, especially for women and urban residents.
