Filiation trials, this is, legal procedures to establish or challenge either paternity or maternity did not were subject to solid evidence. Nowadays, due to the medical and scientific developments, the claiming parties are compelled to prove by DNA test their allegations.

Scientific and medical test for establishing paternity  or  maternity have had changes up to the development of the DNA test, which in the Colombian legislation gave rise to the Law 721 of December 24th of  2001.

DNA test can effectively determine paternity/maternity or rule out it with a 99.99% accuracy. This means that the judicial truth becomes the biological truth. This, in turn, must be reflected in all juridical decisions.
