Este artigo apresenta a primeira aplicação da regressão de fronteira estocástica e dos métodos de probit bivariado com seleção amostral para estimar salários de reserva de pessoas com deficiências psiquiátricas. Utilizando dados do Employment Intervention Demonstration Program (n = 1.648), são comparados esses métodos entre participantes de programas de Empleo Apoyado. A abordagem de fronteira estocástica produz um salário de reserva médio de US$ 5,25 por hora, enquanto o modelo de probit bivariado com seleção amostral estima um valor de US$ 4,50 por hora. Os testes de confiabilidade indicam que o modelo probit bivariado com seleção apresenta maior consistência com as previsões da teoria da busca por emprego. Como a amostra é composta por participantes de programas de Empleo Apoyado, os resultados não devem ser generalizados para todas as pessoas com deficiências psiquiátricas. Os achados sugerem que os benefícios por incapacidade podem facilitar a participação no mercado de trabalho até níveis mais elevados de riqueza, com importantes implicações para as políticas de emprego.
