El presente artículo tiene como objetivo analizar las percepciones de los reclusos sobre su salud mental, las barreras para el uso de los servicios de salud mental y la búsqueda de ayuda, y su relación con la satisfacción con el establecimiento penitenciario. La muestra incluye 136 participantes del sexo masculino, con edades comprendidas entre los 21 y los 68 años (M = 38.27; DE = 11.41). Los datos se recogieron mediante un cuestionario de autorrespuesta en dos prisiones portuguesas. El 52.6 % de los reclusos refieren sentimientos de fracaso y de haber perjudicado a su familia. El temor a que la información sea utilizada en contra de uno mismo (38.5 %) y la falta de confidencialidad (35.9 %) fueron las barreras más frecuentemente mencionadas. La fuente de apoyo a la que más recurren los participantes es la familia/pareja (85.3 %). Se encontró una asociación positiva débil entre el número total de barreras identificadas y las preocupaciones diarias de los reclusos. Menos preocupaciones cotidianas, menos barreras para el uso de los servicios de salud mental y un mayor número de fuentes de apoyo percibidas fueron predictores de una mayor probabilidad de estar satisfecho con el establecimiento penitenciario. Se presentan las implicaciones para la práctica y la investigación derivadas de los resultados del presente estudio.
