A internet representa uma ferramenta com um potencial educativo sem precedente, para que seja aproveitada é necessário compreender a relação entre as características dos seus textos e os recursos do leitor ao aprender. A pesquisa tem identificado que os leitores na Internet precisam dois tipos de conhecimentos, os relacionados com o tema sobre o que estão lendo e os relacionados ao uso da Internet, se tem investigado como estes distinguem-se e entram em jogo. Igualmente se expões que o leitor emprega dois tipos de estratégias, as usadas no texto imprenso que se adaptam ao texto da Internet e as que são específicas ao texto da Internet. Um aspecto que continua sendo controverso é a relação entre estratégias e conhecimentos prévios. O objetivo do presente escrito é fazer uma análise destas pesquisas considerando os seus referentes empíricos e metodológicos na literatura, o conhecimento que têm aportado e as controvérsias que se têm suscitado.
