Diversos estudios han señalado que, conforme aumenten los niveles de renta en la región, el parque vehicular y el uso del automóvil en los diversos países latinoamericanos se incrementarán, con lo que quedará seriamente comprometida la sustentabilidad de las principales urbes. El objetivo fue indagar en las posibilidades de que los sujetos dispongan de automóvil, pero que prescindan de este en sus viajes cotidianos, situación que permitiría rebajar dichas tensiones a la sustentabilidad. El artículo se basa en una explotación estadística del Censo de Población y Vivienda 2020 de México, y analiza los condicionantes para que las y los jefes de hogar que disponen de automóvil no lo usen en sus viajes al trabajo. Se descubre que las peores condiciones socioeconómicas acarrean prescindir más del automóvil, pero, al mismo tiempo, que sujetos acaudalados con actitudes y comportamientos respetuosos hacia el medioambiente, también muestran más probabilidades de prescindir del automóvil.
