Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions in the adult population. Even though the literature states that men present it less frequently than women, this may be due to the way they’re expressing their symptoms. In the present study, regression models were tested to identify how conformity to social norms of masculinity, daily activities and attitude toward help seekin can play a role in the risk of depression in a sample of 207 men with an average age of 28.6 years (SD = 8.60). The Male Depression Risk Scale (MDRS-22), The inventory of Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory (CMNI-22), The Things You Do Questionnaire (TYDQ-21) and the dimension of attitude toward help-seeking of the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire (MHLq) were used. The results showed that in one of the samples studied, conformity to male norms and social connections were predictor variables for risk of depression in men. In the other sample, the variable of attitude toward help-seeking was the most important variable to explain risk of depression in men. The data is discussed regarding the differences in the manifestation of depression in men.
