As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published or submitted to another journal. An explanation is provided in the comments to the editor.
  • The article you wish to submit to the journal complies with the rules for authors presented in the “Submissions” section.
  • The text complies with the bibliographic and style requirements. References are within the text and citation standards (it is the author’s responsibility to verify and complement bibliographic references and ensure the proper use of the works used for the development of the article).
  • Websites and DOI identifiers were added to ensure the digital location of the resource.
  • The authors state that the article is unpublished and original.
  • The authors include in the article a statement of potential conflicts of interest that may invalidate the publication because of financial, sponsorship, institutional, or authorship relationships.
  • The authors guarantee the integrity of the data, accuracy of the analyses, and veracity of the sources cited.
  • Informed consent forms and publication authorizations must be included for research works involving human populations, communities, minors, or patients. Authors shall bear the sole responsibility of failure to comply with these standards, and they have the duty to defend the journal in the event of a claim made by a third party regarding the aforementioned authorization.
  • The authors declare in the article the availability of data, codes, and research materials within the framework defined by the journal in the ethics policy and according to the limitations that originate in the research.
  • The article provides appropriate citations for data, codes, and materials according to the instructions to the authors, including the DOI identifier.

  • Web addresses for references have been added where possible, preferably the DOI.
  • The text has double spacing; font size for Times New Roman is 12 points; italics are used instead of underlining (except URLs); and all illustrations, figures and tables are inserted in the text in their corresponding position and not at the end.

[APL] Reception of new submissions: to be resumed November 1

Dear psychology community,

The journal Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana recieves a high number of submissions, several hundred per year. This presents us, at the current moment, with challenges in managing the review of submissions in a timely manner. In order to focus on the review of submissions already received, we have decided to temporarily close the reception of submissions from June 16 until October 31, 2025. This is intended to better meet our responsibilities to the authors who entrust us with their work.

As of November 1st of this year, we are going to await your high quality manuscripts again, in order to continue with our work of supporting the exchange of information and the discussion around psychology in Latin America and the world, which we have been doing for more than 40 years.

Cordially,

The Editorial Team

Avances en Psicología Latinoamerican

The articles submitted to the journal must follow the rules set by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition, 2020, https://apastyle.apa.org/) regarding its formal submission.

In addition to the manuscript, which must be new and unpublished, the Permission to publish form needs to be completed and signed by every author who contributed to the manuscript. Click here to download the file.

The editorial team assesses the relevance of the manuscripts submitted and checks their compliance with the requirements outlined in the “Rules for authors” section. If the requirements are met, manuscripts are subsequently assigned to an associate editor expert in the corresponding field, who will decide whether to proceed to the peer-review process and manage it if necessary.

Manuscript format and submission

  • Content: new and unpublished works of empirical content or systematic reviews that contribute to the advancement of psychology as a discipline.
  • Ethical aspects: articles based on research with human beings must include a statement in the Methods section, declaring that experiments have been carried out with written consent and knowledge from each participant. If experimental animals are used, explicit reference needs to be made in the Methods section with regard to the use of appropriate measures to mitigate pain. In either case, authors must follow the APA and NC3R ethical standards (https://www.elsevier.com/__data/promis_misc/622936arrive_guidelines.pdf). Whenever possible, a letter of authorization or approval from the Ethics or Research Committee that assessed the ethical aspects of the proposal in question must be added to the submitted documents.
  • Languages: articles are published in Spanish, English, or Portuguese, including an abstract and keywords (obtained from the American Psychological Association’s Thesaurus) in all of these three languages.
  • Format: authors must send their articles in compliance with the style outlined by the American Psychological Association (7th edition, 2020). Works that fail to follow said submission rules will be returned to their authors for revision.

General considerations

  • Page size: Letter
  • Margins: 2.54 cm at each side
  • Double-line spacing
  • 25-cm right-hand-side indent at the beginning of each paragraph
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 point
  • Page numbering at the top right of the page, beginning on the cover page (using the same font as in the rest of the text)

Citations and references:

  • Within the text, citations must include author name and year. When one or two authors are cited, the last names of both of them must be included in all cases; for example: Estes (2000) or Cubero Pérez & Santamaría Santigosa (2005); in parenthesis: (Estes, 2000) or (Cubero Pérez & Santamaría Santigosa, 2005). With three or more authors, the first author’s name needs to be indicated, followed by “et al.”: Ruiz et al. (2006). (Beginning with the first reference in the text, a change with respect to the sixth edition of the APA Manual).
  • The references section at the end of the article, includes citations of all works (articles, books, book chapters, online material, conference presentations, etc.), alphabetically listed by author. For example:

Journal articles, with one author:

  • Gutiérrez, G. (1999). Hormonas y reproducción en aves: la influencia de factores ambientales y sociales. Revista Latinoamericana de Psicología, 31, 151-174.

Journal articles, with several authors:

  • Ruiz, G., Pellón, R. & García, A. (2006). Análisis experimental de la conducta en España. Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana, 24, 71-103.

Books (unlike what was stated in the sixth edition, the city of publication no longer needs to be included):

  • Wolfgang, A. (1997). Nonverbal behavior. Perspectives, application, intercultural insights. Hogrefe & Huber.

Chapter in a published book:

  • Estes, W. K. (2000). Basic methods of psychological science. In K. Pawlik & M. R. Rosenzweig (Eds.), International handbook of psychology(pp. 20-39). SAGE.
  • Figures and tables: these should be included in the corresponding body text. Figures must be press ready, just as pictures, if any.
  • Length: the manuscript must never be longer than 30 pages, including ALL sections of the document (except the title or cover page, in which authors are identified).
  • Language: using “standard” language, as general and simple as possible, is mandatory. Regionalisms or anglicisms with a clear equivalent in the original language (such as the term “prueba,” instead of “test,” in Spanish papers) should be avoided, in addition to any biased writing that may be considered pejorative or discriminatory.
  • Abbreviations: these are allowed, provided words are written in full when mentioned for the first time. For example: Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI), only mentioning the acronym “EPI” later in the text.
  • Supplements: the author will receive a digital copy of the article in PDF format, to be distributed for academic purposes only.
  • Title page: Attached as a supplementary file, not disclosed to peers (see https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/paper-format/title-page, “Professional Title Page”). It should contain:
    • The title in its original language and its translation into English.
    • The authors’ names (omitting professional titles, such as Dr., Ph.D., MA, etc.)
    • Institutional affiliation (only where research took place). The authors’ affiliations must immediately follow the names. If authors have different institutional affiliations, superscript numbers must be added to indicate wh
