Suicidal behavior has been classified as a public health problem due to its high prevalence across all age groups and its high comorbidity with emotional problems such as anxiety and depression. The aim of this study was to propose a latent variable model for suicide risk and its relationship with emotional symptomatology, including sociodemographic aspects, issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and physical and mental health history. This study followed a non-experimental cross-sectional design, which used an associative strategy including the aforementioned factors as latent predictors and suicide risk as the outcome variable. The following instruments were used: Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and Plutchik Suicide Risk Questionnaire. In addition, a sociodemographic questionnaire was used. The sampling type was non-probabilistic by convenience and led to the data collection for a sample of 429 young adults with ages between 18 and 31. Two explanatory models for suicide risk were evaluated. The first model included a superordinate factor for Covid-19 related issues, showing fit indices that bordered on the acceptability criterion. However, the contribution of this superordinate factor was limited, therefore it was excluded from the second model, which showed a good fit to the data. The present findings may contribute to a better understanding of what leads young Colombians to suicide as well as to promoting and preventing their mental health, considering relevant risk factors.
