Infrastructure and Capital: The New Mechanisms of Financialization in Latin America

The financialization of infrastructure in Mexico and Latin America constitutes a process through which these assets, traditionally oriented toward the provision of public goods, are reconfigured as vehicles for capital valorization and accumulation. The aim of this article is to examine the main financial instruments that facilitate private capital participation in the financing of infrastructure projects, while assessing their economic and territorial implica­tions. The methodology is based on a documentary and bibliographic analysis of specialized literature, regulatory frameworks, and institutional reports, complemented by comparative examples from regional experiences (Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Colombia). The findings indicate that although these mechanisms contribute to mobilizing long-term invest­ments and diversifying funding sources, they also displace the logic of collective welfare in favor of financial profitability criteria, generate risks associated with market volatility, and deepen socio-territorial inequalities. The article concludes on the need for robust state regulation aimed at redistributing benefits and mitigating asymmetries.
