Abstract

This study analyzes life within a set of high-rises, high-density towers in the Estación Central district of Santiago, Chile. It represents a paradigmatic case, a symptom of a city conceived as a financial asset, manifested through private development within a framework of lax regulation, extreme density, and massive expansion. Its most extreme expression materializes in towers up to 38 stories high with apartments as small as 18 m², lacking comprehensive urban planning, adequate infrastructure, and sufficient basic services. In this context, a crucial questionarises: How do people inhabit these towers? What does it mean to live in just 30 m² within a mega residential vertical structure? Through a qualitative approach, this study constructs a portrait of vertical family life, exposing the conf licts, negotiations, and strategies that shape this unique way of inhabiting urban spaces.
