México: Contrarrevolución neoliberal y relaciones con el Vaticano

Abstract

Neo-liberal globa/isation, ínstalled of ficial/ y in Mexico duríng the admi­ nistration of President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado (1982-7 988), re­ ached íts peak -although not its conclusion- during the administration of Carlos Salinas de Cortari ( 7 988-1994). In the name of socia/-liberalism, or in other words, of the Mexican equiva/ent to globalísing neo-libera­ lism, Salinas introduced changes and unthínkahle cleavages to the tra­ ditional Mexícan Política/ System. One of those changes was the of ficial reinstallation of dip/omatic relations with the Vatican State, whích requi­ red modí fications to the Mexícan Constitution, va/id since 1917. The hypothesís of thís article is that those religious changes proposed by Salinas, where not intended far benefiting neither the Mexican, nor the Vatican States. La ter events suggest that those changes corresponded to an aggressíve µolítical strateg y, devísed by Salinas himself to increase and per petuate his personal power. Bene fits far the Vatican State where a/so felt during the process.
