Reflection on the current international normative framework to eradicate gender-based violence in colombia and the relevance of a new international convention

Despite the international commitments acquired by Colombia (CEDAW / Belém do Pará) and the implementation of laws and national plans to eliminate Gender Based Violence (GBV), in 2023 the president declared an emergency for this issue. This article aims to analyze the relevance of a new international treaty for Colombia, which is coherent and efficient with the reality of women.

In this way, it will question a proposal from the global south, coming from the international coalition Ewery Woman Treaty, which moves away from the prevailing mainstream vision characterized by soft law control mechanisms. On the contrary, this alternative urges to deepen the conceptualization of the problem from the perspective of intersectionality, embracing its complexity through the establishment of homogeneous international standards in terms of typification of GBV and measurement instruments, creating a uniform basis for a binding mechanism.

For this purpose, will be used the feminist theories of international relations. First, key concepts of the Violence Against Women; second, the most relevant international conventions adopted by Colombia and their implementation; third, the current situation of GBV in Colombia; and finally, analysis of the contribution of the EWT Coalition to the conceptualization of GBV.
