La dimensión social en el marco de las Áreas Protegidas es uno de los temas centrales en el debate actual sobre los procesos de esta­ blecimiento y manejo de las mismas. La mayor preocupación en el contexto colom­ biano y otros países llamados del Tercer Mundo es sobre la legitimidad que éstas tie­ nen en el contexto local, y los posibles cami­ nos para lograr que el objetivo de conserva­ ción para el cual se crearon sea coherente con las necesidades locales y globales tanto de las poblaciones humanas como de los ecosistemas. Es así como este artículo inten­ ta ofrecer una propuesta de análisis de las interacciones socioambientales de los terri­ torios donde están localizadas las Áreas Pro­ tegidas usando el concepto de Lugar-Red como unidad de análisis y el Análisis de redes sociales como metodología analítica para identificar y estimar las interacciones socio­ ambientales. Este marco teórico meto­ dológico se ilustrará con un estudio de caso que analiza las interacciones de los grupos organizados e instituciones con el Parque Na­ cional Natural Utría, con el fin de destacar la importancia de estas herramientas analíti­ cas para facilitar los procesos de toma de decisiones sobre el manejo y conservación de los valores biológicos y ambientales, involucrando a los actores sociales y su en­ torno ambiental en la gestión de las Áreas Protegidas.
