The article begins with an analysis of the two paths that were open to Andean integration in the middle of the nineties: to strengthen the actual integration or to convert the manner in which the first position gained a greater foothold in the Latin American context. Furthermore, several pending duties in the integration process and the structural difficulties are analysed in a comparativechart that establishes the differences between the integration process in Europe and the Andean Community in order to show that the latter cannot be a mechanical replica of the European integration. Finally, other structural obstacles are analysed, as well as the immediate objectives of the Community with respect to the South American free trade area and ALCA or hemisphere space. The article concludes with some brief considerations regarding the political dimensions of integration.
