Colonial acquisition expired with the dissolution of the colonial empires. The principle of immunity should not permit the extension of any of them. The principles that allowed states to subjugate, exploit, and, in certain cases, perpetuate genocide to  the resources of foreign territories havesince evolved This article explores how the international legal principle of equity can influence the conflict between sovereign immunity and the cargo of sunken vessels through the condemnation of abuses of sovereignty
in successive instruments of treaty law, statutes of international criminal tribunals, and state practice.
